January 21, 2015 Meeting Minutes

Date: Wednesday, January 21, 2015 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church

Member Attendance (quorum): Matt Cooley, Steph Figary, Steve Maakestad, Mary-Margaret, Monser, Alex Pratt

Member Absence: Susan Johnsson

Associates: Susan Curry, Chris Raines; potential new EAC member Charles Charlesworth

Also in attendance: members of Earth Fest Planning Committee: Mark and Eileen Wenckus, Chris Mrozinski, Julie Lefever, Liz Walkanier.

Action Items by person:


a) Send Susan contact info of a professional to do infiltration testing, 2-3 landscaping

companies who can assist with rain garden installation

b) Text ideas to Raines for the EAC website


c) Confirm all previous rain gardens are registered and have signs.

d) Measure how much each faucet leaks in 24 hours.


e) Send flyer about March 26 Rain Garden workshop at North Wales Library

f) Connect with certain people about being presenters at Earth Fest


g) Reach out to potential homeowners for 2015 Rain Garden installations

h) Send bio and photo to Raines for website

i) Draft letter to Borough Council regarding need for steep slope, wetland protection,

floodplain, riparian buffer, and woodland ordinances.


j) Contact potential exhibitors for Earth Fest event April 18, 2015; rally volunteers

k) Draft flier/save-the-date for Earth Fest event.

l) Work with Curry to get more pages of the EAC website updated


n. Reach out to potential Rain Garden homeowners with Monser. Prepare list of vendors and

professionals for homeowners:

o. Communicate: David Morgan will put out Clear Stream recycling stands at Boro events

p. Connect with certain organizations about Earth Fest table or presenting


q. Research and design a visual display for our Water Conservation mini-campaign showing

how much water is wasted with a dripping faucet, high flow shower head, or running water while brushing teeth.

r.  Send photo and bio to Raines

s.  Postponed until June:  Read and cull policy ideas from Penn State manual for maintaining

1. Tour of Calvary United Methodist Church: sanctuary, chapel, meeting room, etc.

Planning for Earth Fest on April 18, 2015. Chris updated on progress and needed assistance.

Roles were claimed by everyone present. Chris wants to register exhibitors now to get commitments.

She suggested: WVWA, PFEC, DEP, EPA, FDA, Penn State Extension, Covanta, Impact,  collection, computer collection, Temple Ambler Horticulture, solar panels, Rick Denzien LEV, lectures, movies, Hurricane Schwartz, compost bins, porous pavers, T-shirts. Church may or may not buy and sell refreshments. More ideas offered. Could be 16 or more tables. Parking on street and CVS lot?

Promotion and marketing would be critical. Promotional avenues seemed plentiful.

2. Council/Committee updates:

a. GlenMawr subdivision was approved reluctantly; hands were tied based on subdivision ordinances.

b. Meeting with Frank DeRuosi to design Borough Park survey Feb 5. 6:00 pm (location TBD)

3. EAC General Updates and New Actions:

a. EAC Spring Mini-Campaign will focus on water conservation to support residents in keeping their water bills down despite raised rates. Pratt suggested a display that SHOWS how much water is wasted when brushing teeth with the water running. (Alex Pratt)

b) Park Clean-up day in June or July. Figary confirmed that Montgomery County

Master Watershed Stewards would be interested in running the clean-up day as a volunteer project.

c) The EAC discussed issuing a letter to Council regarding the need for ordinances to address steep slopes, flood plains, wetland protection, riparian buffers and woodlands.

4. Rain Gardens:

a. The WVWA is holding a rain garden workshop March 26 at North Wales Library 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

b. To promote interest in rain gardens the EAC may organize a June 2015 Rain Garden

Tour with publicity at the Earth Day event and Farmers’ Market. Curry and Monser will check with existing rain garden homeowners to find some who would help with planning the tour.
