The Borough’s Safe Battery Disposal Program
Ambler Borough, working with the Environmental Advisory Council, has set up an environmentally efficient battery recycling drop-off site in the Ambler Borough Hall Lobby for residents to safely dispose of batteries. Batteries contain many chemicals that are unsafe for the environment and they are currently being thrown into the trash.
Battery Solutions provides a simple method compliant with EPA and US DOT standards for residents to recycle batteries. This is not just a disposal program. Battery Solutions is Responsible Recycling (R2:2013) and Recycling Industry Operating Standards (RIOS™) certified. Battery Solutions actually RECYCLES the batteries in the most environmentally and economically efficient way. This program allows us to reuse our natural resources efficiently and decreases the harmful environmental effects of batteries. It reduces the need for mining and processing of virgin materials. Battery Solutions provides a Confirmation of Reclamation certificate.
Batteries and handheld electronics may be dropped off in the Ambler Borough Hall Office during regular business hours to be placed in the iRecycle Container. The container holds 55 pounds of batteries. The Borough will maintain the drop-off container and send it off to Battery Solutions when full.

- Nickel Cadmium (NiCd)
- Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)
- Lithium Primary
- Mercury Batteries
- Silver Oxide
- Button Cells
- Small Electronics (cell phones, iPods, tablets, power tools, etc.)
ALL ITEMS MUST FIT EASILY INTO THE RECYCLING CONTAINER!
How recycling is accomplished:
Alkaline – 100% recycled by using an alternative to High Temperature Metal Recovery (HTMR) most recyclers use. Instead, a non-thermal mechanical decomposition process is used, yielding a higher recycling efficiency rate (RER). This is better for the environment, producing virtually no emissions. It breaks an alkaline battery into three end products: zinc and manganese concentrate, steel and paper, plastic and brass fractions for use in other applications.
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) – Using a proprietary heat treatment, the highest quality nickel feedstock is extracted from these batteries. This nickel is desirable to the steel and alloy market and can be used in making stainless steel products.
